California's Sutter Health Reports Stolen Computer With 4.2M Patients' Information

Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health announced a computer with information on approximately 4.2 million patients was stolen from its affiliate Sutter Medical Foundation, according to a health system news release.

The company-issued, password-protected, unencrypted desktop computer was stolen from Sutter Medical Foundation administrative offices on the weekend of Oct. 15. The computer contained information on approximately 3.3 million patients whose healthcare provider is supported by Sutter Physician Services and approximately 943,000 Sutter Medical Foundation patients.

Information on the 3.3 million Sutter Physician Services patients dates from 1995-Jan. 2011 and includes names, addresses, birth dates, phone numbers, email addresses if provided, medical record numbers and health insurance plan names. 

Information on the 943,000 Sutter Medical Foundation patients dates from Jan. 2005-Jan. 2011 and includes the same demographic information listed above in addition to dates of services and descriptions of medical diagnoses and/or procedures used for business operations.

Sutter Physician Services provides billing and managed care services for facilities within Sutter Health. Sutter Medical Foundation is a multispecialty healthcare provider with clinics in California.
