Key recommendations include:
- Increase awareness among staff about the risks and prevalence of medical identity theft.
- Increase patient awareness of all forms of medical identity theft, including knowingly using someone else's medical information to obtain treatment, and potential consequences.
- Use technical fraud detection measures such as anomaly detection and data flagging.
- Implement an identity theft response program for flagged records, and train staff accordingly.
- Offer patients suspected of being medical identity theft victims a copy of their records to review.
- Promptly correct any record corrupted by medical identity theft.
