Boston Children's, Harvard Medical School Given Research Access to Twitter's Data Trove

Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School have been selected under Twitter's #DataGrants program to receive access to Twitter usage data to expand their HealthMap project.

The HealthMap project, launched at Boston Children's in 2006, aggregates data from sources like the World Health Organization and Google News to track outbreaks and other epidemiological events around the globe.

The researchers will use the Twitter data to focus on tracking foodborne and gastrointestinal illnesses in near-real time.
