BIDMC to develop platform for patients to contribute to EHR

The Commonwealth Fund awarded Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with a $450,000 grant to develop OurNotes, an initiative for patients to add notes to their own medical records.

OurNotes is an extension of OpenNotes, which gives 5 million U.S. patients online access to clinician's notes in their medical record. The OurNotes platform would expand patient capabilities within the EHR and allow them to do things like add topics or questions for an upcoming visit, or sign off on clinician notes from an appointment.

The grant will fund research to develop a user-centered design based on consultations with clinicians, industry experts and patients. The prototype will later move into pilot testing and clinical trial stages.

In addition to BIDMC, four other sites will pilot the project: Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System, Seattle-based Harborview Medical Center, Seattle-based Group Health Cooperative and St. Joseph, Mo.-based Mosaic Life Care.
