The U.S. Department of Defense has narrowed its vendor search for its cloud computing services contract to Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, CNBC reports.
The Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure contract, which could be worth more than $10 billion over the next decade, will require the transfer of large amounts of DOD data to a commercially operated cloud system, according to the news outlet.
Oracle and IBM were also considered for the contract, but the DOD ultimately ruled them out and narrowed the finalists down to Amazon and Microsoft Azure, citing the companies as the only organizations able to meet the contract's minimum requirements, a DOD spokesperson told CNBC in an email April 11.
The DOD was originally supposed to reveal the winner of the JEDI contract in September 2018 but experienced delays. The department will announce what company is offered the deal as early as July, according to the report.
