Technology startup Aventura announced that it had raised $14 million in its third-round venture capital financing for an interface it claims will accelerate EMR use.
Denver-based Aventura, which has patented a process it calls "awareness computing," specializes in workflow optimization. Awareness computing involves identifying users based on their location and what device they are using. For example, when a physician taps a badge to a terminal, the system immediately brings up the chart and applications the physician needs based on his or her location in the clinic. The interface also flows between desktop and device, depending on where the physician is using it.
The process builds upon single-sign on systems — a system in which a user only has to log in once to access an interface from any related device — by presenting the data the user needs immediately, according to a news release.
Aventura received funding from Safeguard Scientifics, Merck Global Health Innovation Fund, Excel Venture Management, HLM Venture Partners and Memorial Care Innovation Fund, among others.
"Awareness computing is the next generation in workflow optimization as it combines the security and speed benefits of [single sign-on] with deep intelligence to deliver clinical and business awareness to the point of care," said John Gobron, CEO of Aventura, in the news release. "This round of funding along with the addition of Safeguard and Merck as strategic investors, will allow us to accelerate the rate at which we can apply innovation to address the clinical, business and regulatory needs of healthcare providers."
