Watertown, Mass.-based athenahealth announced a new messaging app to be used with Apple Watch.
The app, athenaText, is a secure text messaging app that gives physicians easy access to clinical information and communication channels with care teams in an effort to leverage mobile health to bolster point-of-care and on-the-go communication, clinical intelligence and care coordination.
The app will be linked to Epocrates, an athenahealth medical reference app that provides clinical information to clinicians. It will also be integrated with athenahealth's EHR, allowing providers to coordinate care and related information across devices.
"The Apple Watch extends athenahealth's ability to engage and inform providers at and around the moments of care; it elegantly and unobtrusively puts technology in the perfect place within the exam room," said Abbe Don, vice president of user experience at athenahealth.
athenaText will be available in the Apple Watch App Store when the wearable itself is released April 24. The first version of athenaText will be read-only, with interactive and clinical intelligence capabilities being introduced in June.
