Apple plans to unveil a new Bluetooth application programming interface for its Apple Watch, the company's vice-president of technology Kevin Lynch said during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif., which took place June 5 through June 9, according to CNBC.
The API will enable users to wirelessly connect a glucose sensor created by medical device maker Dexcom to their Apple Watch. In the past, glucose-sensor developers needed to build Bluetooth connections through the iPhone rather than directly with the Apple Watch.
"Data may have been lost if the phone was out of range," Brandon Ballinger, founder of Cardiogram, a health-tracking app on Apple Watch, told CNBC. "This new Bluetooth API may seem like a small detail, but with it, Apple is laying the right technical foundation."
