Amid Criticism, Blumenthal Says Stage 2 Meaningful Use 'On Track'

Despite critical remarks regarding the proposed criteria for stage 2 meaningful use and Dr. David Blumenthal's pending move back to Harvard, the national coordinator for health IT sent a reassuring message to the public that stage 2 meaningful use indeed is still 'on track,' according to a Healthcare IT News report.

Dr. Blumenthal said the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT is working hard to address many of the concerns healthcare providers, associations and organizations have brought up about stage 2 meaningful use proposed measures. The ONC also recently published a study regarding the many benefits of health IT in Health Affairs.

He also points to other ONC initiatives to prove its commitment to furthering health IT and meaningful use. Specifically, he cites an ongoing collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the University of Texas to develop tests for usability of electronic health records, according to the report.

"I will keep following this area of work with great interest and support this work to the extent that I can in my new role," Dr. Blumenthal said.
