Amazon to hire 250,000 by end of year, bumps up hourly pay

Amazon plans to hire 250,000 full-time, part-time and seasonal workers through the end of the year, the company stated in its third quarter financial report Oct. 26.

The company conducted layoffs earlier this year in multiple departments and ended the quarter with a 3% decline in personnel year over year. Amazon currently has around 1.5 million employees, which is up slightly from earlier this year but still down from more than 1.54 million over the same period last year.

Amazon also increased the hourly wage for customer fulfillment and delivery roles to $20.50-plus per hour, marking the biggest annual investment in U.S. hourly pay ever at $1.3 billion. The company also announced plans to invest $840 million for higher wages and more benefits for delivery service partners.
