8 Recent Data Breaches

The following data breaches occurred over the past two weeks, starting with the most recent.

1. Santa Rosa, Calif.-based St. Joseph health is notifying 34,000 patients of a potential data breach following a burglary at the Redwood Regional Medical Group office, which St. Joseph health recently acquired. A thumb drive containing patient X-ray information was stolen from an employee's locker.

2. Access Health CT, Connecticut's state health insurance marketplace, announced a potential data breach after a backpack containing patient information for approximately 400 people was found outside a deli.

3. The protected health information of 1,801 patients at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center was possibly compromised after an employee was working with the data on his home computer. While the employee was authorized to access this information, he was using the test log on his personal computer, which is outside the secured Penn State Hershey system.

4. The medical information of 3,675 Highmark members may be compromised due to health risk assessment results being mailed to the wrong patients.

5. Los Angeles-based Sharper Future, a private mental health service provider, notified its patients of a potential data security breach after electronic equipment storing patient records was stolen from the facilities.

6. Computer hackers "gained entry" to a Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services server, potentially compromising patient data.

7. The names and Social Security numbers of Hurley Medical Center employees and retirees were exposed when they were accidentally attached to an email regarding the employee health plan.

8. Pittsburgh-based UPMC notified all 62,000 of its employees that hackers may have accessed and stolen their personal information from the hospital's payroll system.
