About half of all healthcare providers dedicate 3 percent or less of their IT budgets to information security, according to the 2013 HIMSS Security Survey.
Survey findings revealed the following:
- 19 percent of organizations dedicate less than 1 percent of their IT budgets to information security.
- 30 percent of organizations dedicate 1 to 3 percent of their IT budgets to information security.
- 9 percent of organizations dedicate 7 to 12 percent of their IT budgets to information security.
- 9 percent of organizations dedicate more than 12 percent of their IT budgets to information security.
- 18 percent of organizations don't know how much of their IT budgets is dedicated to information security.
Physicians tended to spend more of their IT budgets on security. Only 3 percent of hospitals reported spending more than 12 percent on IT security, compared with 7 percent of physician practices.
Survey results were based on responses from 283 health IT or information security leaders from hospitals and health systems around the country.
