The following data breaches were reported in the past three weeks.
1. A computer science professor accessed a server at Monroe, La.-based University Health Conway in a class demonstration showing the potential vulnerabilities of computer systems. More than 6,000 patients were affected.
2. More than 4,000 employees at Kansas City, Mo.-based Children's Mercy Hospital were affected by a security breach discovered in an online scheduling application.
3. Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, Calif., acknowledged a breach of patient data after a stack of hospital admission logs was taken out of the hospital and put in a former employee's car.
4. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems reported a cyberattack affecting nearly 4.5 million people. Hackers allegedly accessed Community Health Systems' computer network and stole information of patients who were referred for or received services from CHS-affiliated physicians in the past five years.
5. More than 60,000 government employees were notified of a potential data breach after a hacker gained access to the state's wellness contractor's computer system.
6. Jersey City (N.J.) Medical Center is notifying patients of a potential data breach after a computer disk was lost in transit. The hospital allegedly sent the disk in a package to a third-party company that reviews payments to the hospital. The package never arrived at its destination.
7. Tucson-based Urological Associates of Southern Arizona notified more than 3,000 patients of a potential data breach after an investigation found employees did not properly dispose of patient urine specimen cups.
