6 recent tech initiatives at Mount Sinai: centers for AI, digital health & more

In just the first few months of 2019, New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System has already launched more technology-based initiatives than most other hospitals and health systems will all year.

Here are six tech updates, many of them artificial intelligence-enabled, that Mount Sinai has made since the beginning of the year:

1. The system partnered with the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, Germany, to establish an institute for digital health at Mount Sinai devoted to researching and developing digital health tools.

2. A Center for Computational Immunology, in which researchers will use genomics, machine learning and immunology to develop precision treatments, opened at Mount Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine in early May.

3. Also in May, the health system appointed its first-ever chief data officer. Andrew Kasarskis, PhD, will oversee data accessibility and digital asset transparency, and support Icahn's entrepreneurial activities.

4. The Hamilton and Amabel James Center for Artificial Intelligence and Human Health, a research hub promoting the use of AI, data science and genomics to advance disease research and treatment, launched June 11.

5. Researchers at Mount Sinai's medical school accepted a $27.8 million contract from the Department of Defense to develop new technologies that can identify and measure an individual's exposure to weapons of mass destruction.

6. In partnership with LabCorp, Mount Sinai established on June 18 the Digital and AI-Enabled Pathology Center of Excellence, which will spearhead the integration of Philips' digital pathology solution across the health system's eight hospitals and several ambulatory care facilities.
