The recent growth in the health IT market has been caused by an influx of incentive dollars from the federal government and the emergence of prescriptive best practices for IT acquisition, according to a report from HIMSS Analytics.
HIMSS Analytics has compiled five statistics about hospital purchasing trends from data gathered over the past five years.
- More than 90 percent of hospitals have recently acquired or installed an IT application.
- There has been a steady increase in the percent of hospitals acquiring and installing these applications over the past five years.
- The most frequently implemented application is a clinical application linked to an existing electronic medical record system.
- The most frequently acquired or installed applications are targeted toward physicians and include computerized practitioner order entry and physician documentation applications.
- Miscellaneous buyers, health IT purchasers who show no discernable pattern in their purchases, account for 79 percent of all buyers in the market. About 11 percent of buyers are focused on acquiring the basics for an EMR system, and 6 percent are acquiring EMR systems plus additional applications and add-ons. Four percent are primarily buying imaging systems and applications.
