5 States With the Highest, Lowest Rates of EHR Adoption

Electronic health record systems are the most prevalent in Hawaii, according to a new brief from the ONC.

The brief, based on 2013 American Hospital Association's Annual Health IT Survey, reveals EHR adoption nationwide is 59.4 percent, though there is considerable variation among states.

The five states with the highest rates of EHR adoption are:

  • Hawaii (83 percent)
  • South Dakota (82 percent)
  • North Dakota (79 percent)
  • Arkansas (78 percent)
  • Wisconsin (78 percent)

And the five states with the lowest rates of EHR adoption are:

  • Utah (26 percent)
  • Kansas (36 percent)
  • Nebraska (41 percent)
  • New Jersey (44 percent)
  • Maine (45 percent)
