5% More Missouri Hospitals Adopted EHRs Since Last Year

Sixty-five percent of hospitals in Missouri are operating a federally-certified electronic health records system — a 5 percent increase since June 2011, according to the "Status of Electronic Health Records in Missouri Hospitals" report from the Missouri Hospital Association's Hospital Industry Data Institute.

The report is based on responses from 152 Missouri hospitals as well as the 2011 information technology supplement that is a component of the annual hospital survey process. The report tracked responses across four main areas of use: electronic clinical documentation, results viewing, computerized provider order entry and decision support. Findings include:

• Ninety percent of the reporting hospitals can record patient demographic data in an EHR.
• More than 80 percent of hospitals can include laboratory and radiology reports as well as radiology images in an EHR.
• Ninety percent of the hospitals eligible for incentives have stated their intent to attest between 2011 and 2015.
• Larger hospitals are more likely to have higher levels of adoption. More than half of hospitals with 250 or more staffed beds have implemented 19 or more of the 24 key functions in EHR systems.
