46% of hospitals spend less than $500k on cybersecurity: 3 things to know

Despite the increasing threat of cybersecurity, many hospitals continue to have significant vulnerabilities in their web security.

Here are three things to know about hospital web security, according to a HIMSS survey conducted in partnership with content delivery network Akamai.

1. The respondents reported using a variety of web security solutions including:

•    On-premise web application firewall: 61 percent
•    Distributed denial of service protection: 42 percent
•    Content delivery network: 21 percent
•    Cloud web application firewall: 21 percent

Nearly a quarter of respondents (23 percent) do not use any of these solutions.

2. Though not all of these solutions are in use, a number of respondents indicated their organizations are planning to implement some of these strategies.

•    Cloud web application firewall: 16.5 percent
•    Distributed denial of service protection: 13.2 percent
•    Content delivery network: 9.9 percent
•    On-premise web application firewall: 6.6 percent

3. Just below half of respondents indicated their organizations' fiscal year budget for cybersecurity threats was less than $500,000. Other organizations indicated the following budgets:

•    Between $500,001 and $1 million: 8.6 percent
•    Between $1 million and $5 million: 5.4 percent
•    Between $5 million and $10 million: 2.2 percent
•    More than $10 million: 4.3 percent
•    Don't know: 33.3 percent
