About 44,000 providers have applied for hardship exceptions to avoid penalties for not meeting meaningful use requirements, according to CMS.
Most of the providers that applied are new to the meaningful use program. CMS has not said how many of the requests will be granted.
The announcement comes after CMS officials acknowledged a glitch in the online reporting system that may prevent some providers from registering their attestation and thereby avoiding penalties next year.
