4 Recent Data Breaches

The following data breaches occurred in the past two weeks, beginning with the most recent.

1. San Francisco-based Blue Shield of California notified 18,000 physicians and healthcare providers whose Social Security numbers were mistakenly made public after they were included in provider roster filings the payer is required to send to the state's Department of Managed Health Care.

2. An employee at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Ala., was arrested and accused of stealing data from a clearing house used by the hospital.

3. The patient data of nearly 300 children may be compromised after a computer was stolen from the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District.

4. Patient records from the electronic health record database at the Alabama Department of Public Health were stolen, prompting the department to notify more than 500 people that their information may be compromised.
