Health IT has the ability to not only improve physicians' workflows and care quality but nurses' as well, according to a new report from Norwich University in Northfield, Vt.
Three technologies in particular can improve nursing efficiency and quality.
Electronic health records: Enable nurses to use templates and enter information via tablets or other devices at the bedside, allowing for quicker documentation.
Computerized order entry: Replaces the labor-intensive task of transcription and improves quality by preventing common transcription errors.
Barcode medication administration: Allows medication to be scanned before administration, helping nurses ensure the correct medication is given to a patient at the bedside.
