3 health IT job trends in 2015

Along with the New Year comes a myriad of changes in the healthcare industry — Medicare reimbursement adjustments, the looming ICD-10 implementation date and the next steps in meaningful use attestation are a few that come to mind.

Parallel to industry-wide changes, health IT will also undergo a slight transformation.

Here are three health IT job trends to watch for in 2015, presented by Tech Cocktail.

1. There will be an increase in tech jobs. Hospitals and health systems are increasingly adopting, implementing and analyzing their technology use, and now with the added measure of federal incentives, positions in this field are bound to grow, according to the report. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that jobs in IT segments will grow at a faster rate than other occupations through 2022, according to the report.

2. Big data skills will be top-of-mind for companies. Nearly three-fourths of organizations have invested or plan to invest in big data over the next two years, which will require an increase in IT workers who are specialized in big data and big data analytics, according to the report.

3. Adequate tech talent may be sparse. While organizations are seeking individuals with IT skills, the report suggests there may be a shortage of qualified IT workers, given how quickly technology changes and proliferates. "In 2015, there won't be enough tech talent to go around, and the IT skills gap will widen," according to the report.
