Walmart is among the companies spearheading the use of blockchain, along with IBM and Microsoft.
Because blockchain has the potential to improve various aspects of operations, Walmart has piloted three different programs within different business areas, according to the Cointelegraph.
Here are three blockchain projects Walmart is undertaking:
1. Tracking food supplies across the globe. In 2018, Walmart teamed up with IBM and nine other companies to develop a new blockchain ecosystem to track food supplies across the world via a decentralized platform known as the Food Trust Blockchain.
2. Drug distribution. In another partnership with IBM, Walmart, KPMG and Merck are embarking on a drug supply chain blockchain pilot. Together the companies are tackling compliance-related issues as well as drug distribution.
3. Drone communication system. Walmart filed a patent in August 2018 for a drone-based system that encrypts and stores operational parameters of each drone device. The information can be passed from one drone to another. Through the blockchain the drones can decrypt, read and configure information shared.
