3 barriers, 2 solutions to healthcare cybersecurity

Cybersecurity has moved to the top of the priority list for a number of healthcare providers as the number of data breaches continues to rise.

Wired outlines the following three barriers of and two solutions to cybersecurity in healthcare.

3 causes
1. Competition: There is a lot of competition for top security specialists, according to Wired. As the number of adopted EMRs goes up, so does the demand for security talent.

2. Costs: The salaries for security experts are rising with their demand, and many healthcare organizations are unable to foot the cost of paying for them.

3. Outdated technology: Healthcare's technology infrastructure lags behind other industries, making them more susceptible to attacks, according to Wired.

2 solutions
1. Education: Wired suggests developing partnerships with colleges and universities to enhance training of the up-and-coming security experts. Additionally, organizations should consider valuing education over experience, especially for candidates who are currently in school learning. Additionally, professional development and training for existing staff can help boost security.

2. Look outside the U.S.: While the recruiting process for overseas candidates will require more time and effort, Wired suggests it can widen the candidate pool and also lower the cost of top talent.
