The average salary for a health IT professional is about $113,269, and the median salary is $95,000, according to the 2013 HIMSS Compensation Survey.
The survey results are based on 1,160 responses received from HIMSS members between August and October 2013.

- Average salaries varied slightly by region. Mid-Atlantic health IT professionals reported the highest salaries, averaging $127,549 per year, followed by those on the West Coast, who reported an average of $122,683 per year.
- Health IT professionals in the east-south central region, including Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana and Alabama reported the lowest salaries, averaging $95,243 per year.
Salaries by organization size:
- Health IT professionals at the largest organizations, those grossing more than $1 billion in annual net revenue, make the most, reporting an average salary of $143,715 per year.
- The next-highest earners come from organizations grossing $100 to $499 million, outearning their counterparts at organizations grossing $500 to $999 million, $141,431 to $136,752.
- The lowest salaries are made by those working for organizations grossing $5 to $9 million. These employees earn an average of $89,450. Health IT professionals at organizations grossing under $5 million earn an average of $106,216 per year.
Salaries by length of employment:
- Employees who have held their current position for 15 to 19 years reported the highest salaries, averaging $123,132 per year. Those who have been in their position for more than 20 years reported an average annual salary of $110,941.
- The lowest salaries were reported by those who have held their current position for 5 to 9 years. They reported an average salary of $110,013 per year. These employees are outearned by their colleagues who have been in their position for less than five years by about $3,000 per year.
Salaries by type of facility:
- Health IT employees at stand-alone hospitals slightly outearned their counterparts at multi-hospital systems, $114,037 to $111,135 per year.
- Health IT employees at ambulatory facilities reported the lowest salaries. Those at facilities with 10 or more physicians reported an average salary of $102,656, and those at facilities with less than 10 physicians reported an average salary of $79,482.
