Hawaii Pacific Health in Honolulu and Hilo (Hawaii) Medical Center have received HIMSS Analytics' Stage 7 award for electronic medical record adoption.
HIMSS highlighted Hawaii Pacific Health's patient engagement strategy in a news release. "This health system has a very strong patient engagement strategy. Over 40,000 patients are using their patient portal to request and schedule appointments and communicate with their physicians," John Daniels, vice president of strategic relations at HIMSS, said in the release. "They also provide a special book to those patients that do not have access to the Internet, so they too, can get more involved in improving their own health."
Hilo Medical Center was recognized for achieving the distinction despite limited resources. "Hilo Medical Center has come a long way in a very short time. They have effectively leveraged their internal resources to achieve advanced EMR capabilities with a small budget and without the advantage of external staffing. They are a great case study in how hospitals can achieve big results with minimal resources," Mr. Daniels said in a news release.
Since 2005, HIMSS Analytics' EMR Adoption Model has tracked EMR adoption in hospitals and health systems throughout the country. The eight-stage model cumulates with stage 7, in which paper records are no longer used. Stage 7 organizations are also able to share patient information electronically and have advanced data analytics capabilities.
