In a recent Nuance blog, Ann Joyal reflects on the key takeaways she learned from CIOs &CMIOS at HIMSS this year.
Editor's Note: This blog originally appeared on Nuance’s website.
Each year at HIMSS, I have the pleasure of hearing healthcare leaders and innovators discuss highlights and hopes for the future of healthcare IT. The perspectives shared in this spotlight come from a “who’s who” of physicians, nurses, CMIOs, and CIOs from healthcare organizations attending HIMSS, including Swedish Medical, HCA, Baptist Health South, WellSpan, Coordinated Care Oklahoma, Partners Healthcare and Gartner.
Here are their comments:
1. “There is no discussion of business in medical school. You have physicians taking care of patients with no knowledge of costs or how to bill. Don’t talk to them about coding.”
2. “Risk is shifting back to the healthcare system. If a radiologist has enough information to tell an ordering physician ‘Yes this test is appropriate,’ that information needs to flow so the test is done and reimbursed.”
3. “If we have human caregivers taking care of human patients, we need language in the record to show caring, context, and certainty.”
