Individuals reported receiving calls from someone claiming to be an official from Eau Claire, Wis.-based HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital requesting payment for a service their relative needed, according to The Dunn County News.
HSHS Sacred Heart said the calls are a scam. The scammers told individuals their relative had been airlifted from HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital and the person would need to pay the bill immediately with either a credit card or by calling a number with a caller ID appearing to link to HSHS Sacred Heart.
HSHS Sacred Heart told The Dunn County News staff at its hospitals would not call with critical information and request payment. The hospital added it would request family members come to the hospital immediately.
Officials believe the individuals who received phone calls were a part of a caller ID spoofing scheme, according to the report.
