Which state will expand Medicaid next?

Indiana and Tennessee, two of the 23 states that have not expanded Medicaid, appear to be making steps towards expansion, according to a Washington Post report.

On Aug. 28, Pennsylvania Gov. Tome Corbett (R) announcedHHS approved the state's plan to launch Healthy Pennsylvania, a program that would use federal Medicaid expansion funding to promote affordable care and create greater access to healthcare for the uninsured.US map

With Pennsylvania's expansion of Medicaid, 23 states still have not expanded. However, Indiana is most likely to expand next, as the state has already asked the federal government to approve an expansion plan. Indiana's proposed plan uses a health savings account model, and could help provide coverage for nearly 182,000 people in the state that fall into a coverage gap.

Tennessee is also likely to expand Medicaid in the near future, as Gov. Bill Haslam (R) has plans to submit a Medicaid expansion plan for approval this year. If Tennessee's plan is approved, it could provide coverage for more than 161,000 people in the state that fall into a coverage gap, according to the report.
