Washington hospital to close this month

Astria Health will close its hospital in Yakima, Wash., within two weeks, according to a Jan. 8 announcement.

Astria, a three-hospital system, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May. The health system is preparing to emerge from bankruptcy, and investors and lenders have shown interest in supporting Astria Sunnyside (Wash.) Hospital and Astria Toppenish (Wash.) Hospital. However, Astria Regional Medical Center in Yakima has not received the same level of interest.

"We have worked diligently to sustain the Astria Regional Medical Center hospital and to avoid closing it, but healthcare industry delivery models continue to shift from inpatient care to outpatient models and due to its continued operating losses, lenders have no interest in refinancing the debt associated with Astria Regional Medical Center," Astria President and CEO John M. Gallagher said in a news release. "Closure is, therefore, necessary as no other feasible option is available."

The health system received approval from the bankruptcy court to close Astria Regional Medical Center. The hospital will begin winding down inpatient services immediately and will close within the next weeks.

Astria acquired the Yakima hospital in 2017. Since then, the hospital has lost more than $40 million.
