Hospitals and health systems in Virginia provided nearly $3 billion in community benefit and support in the state in 2013, according to a report from the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.
Tax-exempt hospitals in the state provided community benefits that exceeded the value of their tax exemptions by more than $461 million, according to the report.
Additionally, the hospitals and systems in Virginia provided $628 million in charity care and $135 million in subsidized health services in 2013, according to the report.
"We are pleased to publish this report, which highlights the significant contributions that Virginia's hospitals and health systems make to their communities beyond the essential services they provide," said Sean T. Connaughton, president and CEO of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.
