The two pediatric hospitals in California's Bay Area — UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital & Research Center — have received $100 million from Marc and Lynne Benioff.
This is the second $100 million gift the Benioffs have given to UCSF for its children's hospital. Marc Benioff, founder of Salesforce.com, has net worth of approximately $3 billion, according to Forbes.
The donation is expected to be used to build up the hospitals' existing research programs, attract new medical experts and accelerate the area in a "national and global" hub for children's medicine.
The two hospitals finalized an affiliation agreement this past January. They will now operate under the following names: UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, together forming UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals. The new 183-bed UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco is undergoing construction at UCSF Mission Bay, UCSF's new integrated hospital campus which is expected to open in February 2015.
