Tri-City Emergency Medical Group leaders are discrediting an audit that found significant errors in the organization's Medicare billing, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The medical group, which treats patients at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, Calif., was recently audited by Synergistic Systems of Encino, Calif.
Medicare claims submitted by the medical group from March to May 2015 had an error rate of 44 percent, according to audit documents obtained by The San Diego Union-Tribune. Synergistic Systems said billing errors included inaccurately coded physician-assisted services and inappropriate use of special modifiers that can increase compensation.
But Gene Ma, MD, a member of the medical group and Tri-City Medical Center's chief of staff, told The San Diego Union-Tribune three additional independent audits "completely invalidated the Synergistics audit."
"It is [Tri-City Healthcare District's] position that appropriate due diligence has been completed in this matter," the hospital said in a prepared statement, according to the article.
Synergistic Systems stands by its audit.
