Houston-based University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center's James P. Allison Institute has received a $5 million donation from the Timken Foundation in Canton, Ohio.
The funds will go toward recruiting top scientists and researchers across several fields, according to an Oct. 27 news release from MD Anderson.
"Thanks to the generous support of benefactors like the Timken Foundation, we are attracting world-renowned scientists to transform how we conduct impactful research and help us realize the promise of immune-based treatments for all patients," James Allison, PhD, director of the Allison Institute and regental chair of immunology at MD Anderson, said in the news release.
Dr. Allison is the namesake for the institute, which aims to advance breakthroughs in novel therapies and bring immunotherapy to patients across medical disciplines. He was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on T cell biology and inventing ipilimumab, the first immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment for cancer.
