Ellwood City (Pa.) Medical Center has made headlines in the last month amid financial issues and a medical service ban.
Below is a timeline of the issues reported by Becker's Hospital Review since Nov. 27:
Nov. 27. Citing serious violations of the state health law, the Pennsylvania health department orders Ellwood City Medical Center to cease inpatient and emergency services. The hospital remains open for outpatient procedures.
Nov. 28. Employees at Ellwood City Medical Center report that they didn't receive their full paychecks.
Dec. 5. Ellwood City Medical Center lays off 92 of its 171 employees. The layoffs were attributed to a decline in patient hospitalizations, an issue with submitting timely payments and the recent service shutdown.
Dec. 6. Ellwood City Medical Center misses payroll for the second consecutive time.
Dec. 9. Beverly Annarumo, who has been the CEO at Ellwood City Medical Center since 2017, announces her resignation. She will officially leave the role Jan. 3. Ms. Annarumo also divulges that the "emotional roller coaster" of recent layoffs and a state order to end some services prompted her to step down.
Dec. 10. Ellwood City Medical Center shuts down completely. A sign is posted on the hospital's main entrance saying "all clinical services are suspended until further notice."
Dec. 11. Ellwood City officials call for a change in ownership of the community hospital due to the mounting problems. Ellwood City Medical Center has been owned by Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Americore Health since 2017.
