Texas Vista Medical Center to close with all 827 employees laid off

All 827 employees at the San Antonio-based Texas Vista Medical Center will be permanently laid off when it closes May 1, according to a notice filed with state regulators.

The 325-bed hospital, which has been operated by Dallas-based Steward Health Care since 2017, has provided healthcare to predominantly lower income residents in San Antonio and South Texas for almost 40 years and has been struggling financially.

According to a March 1 press release, approximately one-quarter of the center's patients do not pay for the services provided by the hospital. The center would need to be taken over or receive significant government relief to prevent the closure, the release said.

Steward approached San Antonio-based University Health and Bexar County to potentially take over the facility, but local reports said University Health wasn't ready to do so.

All 827 employees are eligible to look for alternative positions within other affiliated facilities. Steward Health Care operates 39 hospitals across multiple states.
