Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam (R) has proposed an alternate Medicaid expansion plan under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a report from The Hill.
Although the plan hasn't been finalized, it has been verbally approved by the Department of Health and Human Services, according to the report.
Under the Insure Tennessee plan, "tens of thousands" of residents would be able to get health insurance coverage, according to The Tennessean.
"We made the decision in Tennessee nearly two years ago not to expand traditional Medicaid," Gov. Haslam told The Tennessean. "This is an alternative approach that forges a different path and is a unique Tennessee solution. Our approach is responsible and reasonable, and I truly believe that it can be a catalyst to fundamentally changing healthcare in Tennessee."
More than 20 states have not expanded Medicaid.
