Steward to lay off 944 in Ohio amid hospital closures

Dallas-based Steward Health Care's closure plans for Trumbull Regional Medical Center and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, both in Warren, Ohio, will result in 944 employees being laid off, according to WARN notices filed Aug. 21 and Aug. 22.

Six "satellite facilities" in Ohio will also be shut down as part of the hospital closures, which are set to take place on or around Sept. 20.

The notices include 765 affected employees at Trumbull Regional Medical Center, 170 at Steward's Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital and nine at Steward's Northside Regional Medical Center, a breast health center affiliated with Trumbull.

"We remain hopeful we can find an alternative solution that would keep the hospitals open and preserve the jobs of our dedicated team members," Steward said in an Aug. 21 statement. "We want to help save this hospital and will continue to work with qualified bidders during this process."

Steward plans to provide support to affected employees and to ensure a smooth transition of care for patients. Local health systems such as Cincinnati-based Mercy Health have also shared their willingness to help during the transitions.

"We will continue providing high quality, compassionate care, now and in the future, regardless of changes in the local health care landscape," a spokesperson for Mercy Health said in an Aug. 22 statement shared with Becker's. "Mercy Health is always recruiting top talent for key roles within our ministry, including positions in nursing, nursing support, imaging (all modalities), surgical tech, surgical assistants, sterile processing techs, lab professionals (all specialties), respiratory therapists and medical assistants. Mercy Health is also hiring for many entry level positions."

In an Aug. 22 joint statement shared with Becker's, three presidents of local AFSCME chapters that represent 800 employees at both hospitals said while the closure news is devastating to the communities and employees, they plan to do everything they can to help keep the hospitals open.

"AFSCME Locals 2026, 2804, and Local 2288 are willing to collaborate with all potential partners who wish to work with us and our members to keep the doors open and facilities operational with no interruption of service," the joint statement said.

Steward declined to provide Becker's with a comment.
