Pascagoula, Miss.-based Singing River Health System's failed pension plan has made it the subject of a criminal investigation by the Jackson County District Attorney's Office, the state auditor and the FBI, according to a Sun Herald report.
"I can confirm there is a criminal investigation, the results of which will be presented to a grand jury to ultimately decide if there is criminality involved or not," Jackson County District Attorney Tony Lawrence told the Sun Herald.
Mr. Lawrence was unable to provide any specific details about the criminal investigation. However, he did tell the Sun Herald the DA's Office, the state auditor and the FBI are working together on the criminal probe.
Singing River provided a statement regarding the investigation saying it has been "cooperating and will continue to fully cooperate with any and all reviews and investigations by any government entity."
Singing River is already facing two civil lawsuits filed over the failed pension plan. This week, the system filed a lawsuit against KPMG claiming the national accounting firm made significant auditing errors, including "masking" the underfunding of the system's pension plan.
