Just one day after House Republicans unveiled their budget proposal, GOP Senators revealed their plan for 2016.
Here are five takeaways for healthcare leaders from the Senate GOP budget.
1. The Senate GOP budget blueprint, which was rolled out by Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, projects saving $4.3 trillion from 2016 to 2025 from mandatory programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid.
2. "The budget offers up $430 billion in savings from Medicare without saying how," according to The New York Times. The budget plan also includes extending the life of the Medicare trust fund by five years, but provides no details as to how that will be achieved.
3. Unlike the House GOP budget proposal, Sen. Enzi's plan doesn't include specific policy prescriptions, such as calling for Medicare to be transformed into a premium support model.
4. Like the House GOP budget plan, the proposal from Senate Republicans calls for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to be repealed in its entirety.
5. Under the proposal, Medicaid would be transformed into a system similar to the Children's Health Insurance Program, which involves states receiving a capped amount of federal funds annually if they provide matching funds, according to The Wall Street Journal.
