Safety issues could cost Texas hospital Medicare/Medicaid funding: 4 things to know

Hopkins County Memorial Hospital in Sulphur Springs, Texas, is in jeopardy of losing its Medicare and Medicaid funding after CMS found it failed to meet minimum health and safety standards, according to a KSST Radio report.

1. The hospital originally had until Nov. 6 to correct problems at its facility, but CMS has extended that deadline to Nov. 30.

2. CMS has agreed to a systems improvement agreement, which will allow the hospital to "develop and implement systemic correction" with help from independent consultative experts, according to the report.

3. During a complaint survey of Hopkins County Memorial Hospital on Aug. 14, the Texas Department of State Health Services found the hospital did not safely administer psychotropic medications in the emergency department, according to a summary of the CMS report. Another full survey visit was conducted Sept. 30, at which time the survey team found the hospital did not provide a safe, sanitary environment to avoid possible transmission of infectious diseases, the summary reads.

4. Hospital CEO Michael McAndrew stated this week, "Form 2567 which lists the surveyors' citations, does not present an accurate or adequate picture of Hopkins County Memorial Hospital," according to the report. He added, "I suggest that if someone wants to see what kind of organization we really are they go to CMS' own website that rates hospitals, HospitalCompare.gov. The scores on this website clearly demonstrate a history of low infection rates, high-quality care and strong patient satisfaction scores."
