Revenue cycle leaders see gen AI's medical coding potential

Sixty-five percent of health system revenue cycle leaders surveyed believe generative AI will have a substantial effect on their medical coding operations, according to an Oct. 16 report from Akasa.

Akasa, a revenue cycle firm that uses artificial intelligence, commissioned a survey with responses from 284 hospital and health system CFOs and revenue cycle leaders through the Healthcare Financial Management Association's Pulse survey program. The survey was designed to assess the adoption of gen ai and large language models at hospitals across the U.S.

Four things to know:

1. Overall, 90% of those surveyed said gen AI will have an effect on coding operations.

2. Forty-five percent of those surveyed said they are optimistic that gen AI will significantly improve coding operations and 20% said they see the technology as a "complete game-changer" that will lead to a full restructuring of their organizations' coding operations.

3. Twenty-five percent of those surveyed said the new coding tools will help incrementally but are skeptical of their potential.

4. Akasa CEO and co-founder Malinka Walaliyadde said in the report that gen AI is the "future of medical coding."

"It's like giving coders superpowers," he said. "They can now perform the same work, but both better and faster. We don't believe in replacing coders with technology. The goal is to empower them, streamlining and automating routine tasks and ultimately freeing up coders to focus on the areas of highest value where their attention is most needed."
