Researchers at U of Alabama Birmingham receive $6.5M grant to investigate gout

University of Alabama Birmingham Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology researchers received a $6.5 million grant to study gout and hyperuricemia.

The grant, awarded by the National Institutes of Health, will advance four research projects at the UAB Center of Research Translation in Gout and Hyperuricemia. These projects will focus on increasing the clinical understanding of gout.

"The incidence of gout is increasing worldwide, with around 4 percent of the adult population in the United States affected… We are focused on making significant strides in research findings to better understand this disease that so many people live with on a daily basis," said Kenneth Saag, MD, director of the Center of Research Translation in Gout and Hyperuricemia and vice chair of UAB's department of medicine.
