Report: Private Medicare Plans Continue to Grow Despite Cuts, Frozen Rates

Enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans continues to rise in 2011 despite cuts and frozen Medicare Advantage payment rates passed in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation report.

Almost 12 million of Medicare's 47 million beneficiaries are currently enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, which are private Medicare health plans. Last year, 11 million were enrolled in private plans, the report said.

According to the report, the average Medicare Advantage enrollee paid about $39 per month for the plan, roughly $5 less per month than in 2010.

Nearly 65 percent of Medicare Advantage enrollees are also in HMOs. Private fee-for-service enrollment, however, dropped by 62 percent as many Medicare-eligible retirees shifted from PFFS to PPO due to PFFS plans requiring provider networks.
