Dayton, Ohio-based Premier Health has invested in ROSA Spine, a robotic surgical system aimed at making spinal surgeries more accurate and less invasive.
The system's Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton recently received the ROSA Spine robotic surgery device, thanks to a philanthropic gift from the Robert H. Brethen Foundation.
"ROSA Spine allows us to preplan trajectories for procedures which increases control over the procedure," Juan Torres-Reveron, MD, PhD, a neurosurgeon with the Premier Health Neuroscience Institute, said in a prepared statement. "In short, the robot is designed to take the instruments to the right spot and angle to accurately conduct a procedure."
Premier Health said one example of a surgery that can benefit from the assistance of the ROSA Spine is spinal fusion, a procedure that depends on a surgeon's ability to accurately place screws into an extremely narrow area of the spine's anatomy.
The addition of the ROSA Spine comes just months after Miami Valley Hospital purchased the ROSA Brain device, which is used to conduct advanced brain surgery procedures, according to a news release. The technology used with ROSA Brain is similar to ROSA Spine in that the technology maps the location for each procedure. ROSA Brain was first used in February at the hospital.
ROSA Spine and ROSA Brain will also be used for research and training in Brethen Center for Surgical Advancement in Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Miami Valley Hospital.
