The Supreme Court of South Carolina has denied an appeal from Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health that sought to block Piedmont Medical Center from building a hospital in Fort Mill, S.C., according to The Herald.
Rock Hill, S.C.-based Piedmont Medical Center first gained the right to build a Fort Mill hospital in 2006 but has faced appeals from both Atrium and Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health. The 100-bed hospital is expected to cost $120 million.
"Since 2006 our population has doubled, and we still didn’t have a hospital until the announcement today," said Guynn Savage, mayor of Fort Mill. "We had a demonstrated and qualified need in 2006 for what they’re announcing today. For me, that process is broken. But we’re not going to let that overshadow the excitement of the day."
