Pennsylvania Senate Advances Medicaid Expansion Bill to House

The Pennsylvania Senate has passed an amendment that would expand Medicaid in the state to an estimated 350,000 low-income, nonelderly residents.

The Medicaid expansion amendment is tied to the state's budget bill. The measure now moves to the Pennsylvania House, which has many opponents of the Medicaid expansion and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act at large.

The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania, like many other state hospital associations, has aggressively championed Medicaid expansion in the state.

"Without Medicaid expansion, there would be no infusion of federal revenues, no resultant growth to the state economy, no additional jobs, and the cost of care provided to these currently uninsured individuals will remain uncompensated," HAP officials posted on the organization's website. "The Pennsylvania hospital community supports the expansion of Medicaid eligibility to provide low-income workers with health insurance coverage and is advocating that the state move forward with expansion."
