Pennsylvania Hospital Engagement Network Cuts Costs by $446M

Hospitals participating in the Pennsylvania Hospital Engagement Network have reduced the state's healthcare spending by approximately $446 million since 2012, according to the Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania.

The PA-HEN is one of 27 hospital engagement networks across the country working to improve patient care and contain costs under the CMS Innovation Center's Partnership for Patients project, which was launched in 2011. The PA-HEN has saved more than 46,000 patients from preventable harm, according to a news release. Participating hospitals have achieved a 28 percent reduction in 30-day all-cause, all-payer readmissions since 2011. Additionally, network hospitals have reduced patient falls by 43 percent, adverse drug events by 55 percent and surpassed their goal of an overall 40 percent reduction in patient harm.

"Pennsylvania hospitals are to be commended for the accomplishments achieved to date," HAP President and CEO Andy Carter said in the release. "The strides made here in the commonwealth clearly are contributing to the nation's reported success at reducing patient harm and improving care."
