UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport (Pa.), formerly Williamsport Regional Medical Center, has ended its legal fight over millions it says it is owed in Medicare reimbursement, according to a PennLive report.
The hospital reportedly tried to recover $5 million in Medicare reimbursement from fiscal year 2017.
But UPMC Susquehanna spokesperson Tyler Wagner told PennLive the hospital will drop efforts to be reimbursed and won't appeal its case to the U.S. Supreme Court. That decision came after a panel of a Philadelphia federal appeals court determined it lacked jurisdiction to review a Medicare Geographic Classification Review Board decision, according to the report.
The CMS' Medicare Geographic Classification Review Board is responsible for determining whether a hospital being paid under the inpatient prospective payment system can reclassify to a higher wage area to increase its reimbursement.
The board denied the medical center's request for reclassification from the statewide rural to the Bloomsburg-Berwick wage index, which prompted the hospital to file a lawsuit against HHS, CMS the review board and its representatives.
Mr. Wagner told PennLive the hospital received about $5 million less for fiscal year 2017 as a result of the denial.
