The end is almost near for Northern Berkshire Healthcare in North Adams, Mass., as the health system filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, according to a Republican report.
Chapter 7 bankruptcy will result in a complete liquidation and sale of the system's assets, including North Adams Regional Hospital, a home health facility and three hospital-owned physician practices. Northern Berkshire Healthcare's creditors will receive the proceeds.
Last week, Northern Berkshire Healthcare shocked its community when it abruptly shut down and ended operations, resulting in the layoffs of more than 500 employees.
However, North Adams Regional Hospital's emergency room is primed to reopen in the next week under the oversight of Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass., according to the report. A judge has given Berkshire the authority to access the ED and medical records to maintain care in the area despite that a bankruptcy trustee has not yet been appointed.
